Welcome to Ashburton Bowls on line.

Ashy in Finals Again

Two Ashburton Bowls Club played off in the prestigious Southern Indoor Bowls Club 2008 Ladies Pairs Final on Saturday, August 16th. 2008.

Patricia O’Shea (Skip) and Lyn Maloney, following a successful campaign in NSW at Batemans Bay, have followed up their strong work, by reaching the Grand Final at Southern Indoor in 2008. Southern Indoor, well known for grooming the many talented players of Lawn Bowls in their development, and honing the skills of all players in the Winter season, is an excellent Green Gauge surface.

“We were very excited to be in the final!"  Play was tight and competitive, but unfortunately were outplayed by the winners on the day!

Go Ashy Go!

Ashy Win Indoor Finals

Ashburton’s Tuesday night side won the 2008 on the 12th of August pennant in a dominant performance against Blackburn at Blackburn RSL.
The Side consisting of Bryan Reede, lead; Pat Ades, Second; Liz Kortum, Third; and Roger Cawsey, Skip; playing on a fast but biased to one side mat matched it with Blackburn in the first three or four ends before settling down.

Bryan “Mr Ever Reliable” Reede struggled early to get the pace but Pat Ades, starting well, converted on a number of occasions allowing Liz and Roger to add to the count putting real pressure on the opposition.   After 9 ends Ashburton was 10 shots up thanks to two penalty ends where we were gifted 6 shots and a great conversion shot played by Roger for three shoots.  Having the mat, Roger decided to go for long ends and found Blackburn unable to handle them.   Then Bryan found his range and Liz, who had struggled on the narrow side switched hands and played some magnificent bowls putting even more pressure on the opposition who only won two more ends (one shot each).  A great all round team performance.

When 2 or 3 members of a team play well a side becomes hard to beat but when all members of a team play very well they can dominate good sides.  This Team has won its last three matches with an aggregate of 66 shots up and each game better that the previous against good opposition so this Ashburton side is a very good side now working well together as a team.

All in all a great victory enjoyed the team and by the Ashburton supporters who turned out in great numbers.

Other Ashburton players who were part of the Tuesday night competition need to be recognised or their contribution throughout the season and this victory is in no small measure thanks to their part as well.
So thanks go to Jim Monaghan, Annette Campbell, Nick Ryan and Ray Namour.

End of
Season Trip

Those intrepid explorers from Ashburton Bowls Club set off on the Overland Explorer bus on Monday, May 19 2008, heading for Robe in South Australia.

Along the way, we stopped at Ballarat (dry Lake Wendouree), Lake Bolac, Hamilton, and reached Mt Gambier by nightfall.

Day 2 saw us looking at sinkholes (glad I don’t pay that plumber!), Mt Gambier Lady Nelson Centre, and the Lakes District, followed by a trip explorer the places between Mt Gambier and Robe.  A warm welcome at Robe, by David, Tina & Evelyn, our hosts for the next 3 nights.

Day 3 – visiting Robe with the “Lady in Black” guide, who took us to the dead centre of town and other historic places! During the afternoon we had some free time to shop at leisure – our crew know how to shop! We set off for Beachport, and had some spare time there to explore.  Also visited the Woakwine cutting (an amazing engineering feat), and back to Robe. At the end of the day, we had another good meal at the Motel, and joined in a concert and sing-a-long, with Chris (driver/guide) on Guitar and Mary on Mandoline.  Those football songs are fun – and some nice singing and playing!

Day 4 saw us head off to Cape Jaffa winery, (nice tastings) and Cape Jaffa Marina – under construction. Then on to Kingston S.E. – to meet Larry the Big Lobster, the Sundial, and have a good lunch – should have seen those sandwiches!  Some had a more traditional liquid refreshment as well at the pub. Back to another winery on the way home (more tastings and purchases), and back to the Motel for a nice BBQ meal. The Cricket from the West Indies started tonight – first test.

Day 5 was an early start, on the road by 7:15am, heading back to Ashburton, via Casterton, Coleraine (yummy Chocolates), and Penshurst – Mount Rouse – quite a climb, but worth it! Onto Mortlake for a good Pub Lunch, and then home to Ashburton via Shelford for afternoon tea, reaching the Club at 5pm.

Thanks to all who came along, and thanks to Chris for taking us there – we are looking forward to next years trip already!

Schools at Ashburton

Ashburton Bowls Club is happy to host a school group, to promote the great game of Lawn Bowls, and show what can be done on the green!

Pictured left are some of the students who visited in May  from Saliesan College.  A good time was had by all, and the students learnt about team play, and how to play Bowls in a friendly atmosphere over a series of weeks.

If you or your school are interested in participating in the schools program with Ashburton, please call David Patterson on 03 9560 9598 to discuss the possible timing and booking of the sessions.
