Ashburton Triumphant in Division 3 Section 5

Congratulations to the 2nd Side of Ashburton Bowls Club, who won their Section in Division 3 in 2009/2010, and played off in the finals.

The No 2 side of Ashburton Bowls Club recently played off in the First weekend of finals – they were challenged, but came through with the goods!

The Ashburton Rinks held tough, and came through with a win overall to take out Section 5 for 2009/10, and gain promotion to Division 2 in 2010/11.

Last season Ashburton Bowls Club's Top Side advanced to Division 1, and was successful in staying there for season 2010/11.

The last time Ashburton Bowls Club won a Divisional Pennant in the RVBA was in 1986/87, with the Division 7 Pennant win.

Well done to all players and supporters, we are proud of your efforts so far, may success and good bowling follow you in coming games!
  Go Ashy Go!

Double Whammy!

It’s been a tumultuous few weeks for the Ashy Carpet Dashers. As mentioned previously all 5 Ashburton indoor biased bowls pennant team made to it the finals series and the Wednesday Division 2 and 3 sides made it all the way to the finals played at Doncaster last Wednesday.   I have great pleasure in informing you that both sides were victorious.

In the division two final a wonderful team performance proved too consistent for the very highly regarded and fancied Bayswater side in a hard fought match of the highest calibre played in very friendly spirit.   The Ashburton side consisting of Joyce Cape, Adelaide Toward, Dinah Wall and Roger Cawsey settled quickly and played themselves into contention right from the first end by having numbers of bowls in the head and forcing conversion attempts from the opposition.    This resulted in solid scoring of multiple counts and on losing ends only giving ones and twos away so at the half way mark Ashburton had built a solid lead.   Bayswater were not going to give in and fought back strongly but the lead was good enough coming into the last two ends that a defensive strategy was all that was needed to wrap up the match.   With the last bowl of the match to be played Bayswater was holding shot on a long end but Ashburton was up four shots on the scoreboard so Roger Cawsey declared the end to seal a famous victory by three shots.

In the Division 3 final another fine team performance saw Ashburton run away from Glen Waverley.  The Ashburton division three side consisting of, Hilde Tupcienko, Andrew Ades and Ray Namour (skip) got away to slow but steady start building momentum as they went.     “Mr. Reliable” Bryan Reede was back to his brilliant best giving his side a great start with what was possibly his best performance this season rarely, failed to put both bowls close to the jack which enabled Hilde and Andrew to build the head and place defensive bowls when necessary.   A relaxed Ray Namour was able to convert and add to the head frequently enough to ensure a memorable and comfortable victory.   After the match Hilde Tupcienko said “I am so happy” she beamed, “I have never won any championships before” and went around with the biggest smile ever seen at Doncaster or Ashburton.

Many thanks need to go to the players who helped get both of these sides to the finals and the other sides to the final series – some unable to play through injury, illness, lack of qualification or through the propensity of some bowlers to have holidays in the Winter (and who could blame them?) so I shall name them all because it’s their win as well.  Dorothy Winearls, Clarice Dixon, Norm Short and especially Ken Lawrence who filled in and bowled exceptionally well when selection issues were at the  most serious late into the season.  (apologies if I neglected to name someone!   Thanks also go to the contingent of supporters who come to barrack for us.

So what a wonderful season of friendly competition we have had topped off with remarkable success.  With the outdoor season fast approaching I would like to encourage all Ashy Dashers to get on the green and enjoy themselves but also to play with the knowledge that we can succeed at any level, so hold your head high and play with pride. Ashy, Ashy Ashy…

And just a little footnote.  Would you like join the Winners on the Carpet?   During the summer a carpet bowls competition is held at Huntingtower school in Mt Waverley on Wednesday nights.  Please let me know if you would like a game.

BOTTOM GREEN CLOSURE.

Following receipt of the report from SportsTurf  Consultants [Aust] to address the ongoing problems with the bottom green and discussion with our Greens Contractor, the Committee has decided to replace the existing bent grass with Tiftdwarf couch grass. [similar to the top green]

Tiftdwarf grass requires less water and is easier and cheaper than bent grass to maintain and is generally a tougher surface. It will also allow for good bowling for many more years than a bent grass green would allow on this site. Tiftdwarf grass can only be established during the growing season which is in each summer. On Monday 22 Nov 2010 the bottom green will be closed and preparation will begin for Tiftdwarf sprigs from the Corowa Bowls Club to be planted. Given good weather it may be available for play again in April 2011 but not at its best until the summer of 2011/2012. Permission from the Burwood Bowls Club to play one sides Saturday Pennant games from 27 Nov 2010 to March 2011 has been approved.

This will not affect Tuesday Pennant as each side consists of 3 rinks only, so the top green will accommodate two sides each week. Managers of Social bowls and other regular tournaments should note that if their event is played after 22 November 2010, then just the top green of 7 rinks will be available.

Stewart, Alicia, Chris and Mitch
from Ashwood College

Schools at Ashburton

Ashwood College has been competing in the School Pennant.
The first week Stewart, Chris & Alicia were defeated by St Kevin's College 10 to 16.
On the second week Stewart, Chris & Mitch were triumphant against Brighton Grammar winning 23 to 10. In the next game Stewart, Mitch & Alicia played a close game winning against Haileybury College 7 to10 and Ashwood then defeated Melbourne High School 25 to 4 go through to the finals.

The final was a very tight game and we were 11 all going into the second last end but unfortunately lost 1 and then a 3 with the final score 10 to 15.

Congratulations Stewart, Alicia and Mitch for being the Division 4 Semi Finalists
