Saturday Semi Finals 2-3-2013
Ashburton won its section semi-final today v
Bennettswood, the score was 90 - 63.25
Rink scores were:
Bob Lawless 28 - 8.25
Norm Ashby 26 - 12
Carole Williams 24 - 15
David Brown 12 - 28
One Bennettswood player did not turn up, hence the
decimal place in the scores.
The day was wonderful weather, a nice south-easterly
breeze tempering a strong sun. The green ran
beautifully. A big crowd of over 60 watched, great
support from the Ashburton supporters.
At tea it was tight, Ashburton only 1 shot up. There
was something in the tea, as Ashburton picked up 12
shots across its 4 rinks in the first end after tea,
including a 6 on the Ashby rink.
Ashburton now play Auburn at Ringwood on tomorrow
Sunday.

Side
1 travelled to Doncaster today to challenge
Mooroolbark.
Ashburton were defeated 40-61. The Lawrence rink
down 11-28, the Kortum rink down 14-22 and the
Goldsack rink up 15-11.
The quality of bowls was high all day. The match
was worthy of a final. Our people represented
Ashburton in fine style. It was just that the
barkers back ends trumped far too may times for
Ashby to hold the shots. The windy and cold
conditions were testing though it looked like the
14.5 second green ran well.
After 17 ends Ashburton trailed by only 4 shots
9-13 but after 30 ends a gap had opened up 16-30 as
the Lawrence opponents showed their wares, Ken was
down 5-13, Dawn 5-5 and Liz 6-7.
After 41 ends, the big scoreboard was a sad
story, Ashburton down 25-36, Dawn was up 3 shots and
Liz was down 3 shots and Ken under pressure down
8-19.
Ashburton kept trying but the strong Barkers ran
out winners by 21 shots overall.
So Ashburton finished second in a strong Division
1 section. An outcome to be proud bout even if the
disappointment may still be felt by our warriors
today.

Side
1 and Side 3 featured in finals today. Side 1 beat Heathmont
63-44 but alas after a great fight away at Chirnside Park, Side
3 lost by just 6 shots, 54-60.
The Side 1 rink scores were:
Dawn Goldsack, with David Wight, Dinah Wall and Denise
Taylor 16-18
Ken Lawrence, with Pam Brown, Carole Reidell and Marg
Collard 22-12
Liz Kortum, with Bruce Maloney, Judy Hamilton and Bob
Dickson 25-14
Ashburton were under a little pressure for a couple of ends then
edged ahead. After a third of the match was played, the big
scoreboard showed Ashburton ahead 34-23 (31 ends). At this
point, Dawn was down 4-8, Ken up 11-7 and Liz up 13-6. After 42
ends, Ashburton had applied pressure to open up a 13 shot lead
42-39. At this two-thirds stage, Dawn was up 14-8, Ken up 13-11
and Liz up 15-10. Dawn executed a great trail of the jack to
turn a handful of shots down to 6 up and set up a fight in the
run home.
Near the end, the Kortum rink picked up a 5 on end 20 to seal a
comfortable win. The score looks like the match was easy but
the spectators will confirm it took a lot of good Ashburton
bowls and much concentration for 63 ends to get up. Well done
to all on an enjoyable win.
Kortum and Maloney looked perplexed and very serious at one
point in the game as they contemplated getting another shot,
despite the fact Judy has one right on the jack and they lead at
this point 13-6.
The final tomorrow is at Doncaster.

End of saturday season has seen Ashburton complete a
satisfying season, with Side Three dominating its section and
playing a home final next week, Side Four going close to the
four, and Side Two finishing in the middle.
In round 18, Side One had a disappointing loss to Mt Waverley
and only gathered one point. As a consequence they slipped down
the table to 8th, only 4 points from 6th but nevertheless well
out of the relegation zone. They completed the season with 6
wins from 16 games played. The top four is Heathmont (by 1
point), Mt Waverley, Glen Waverley and MItcham. Relegated are
Doncaster and Blackburn.
Side Two also lost, at home V Box Hill, by just 4 shots and 2
rinks up. Side Two finished in 5th place, well out of the four
but well ahead of the bottom five. In interesting round 18
results in this section, the bottom two sides won (Croydon and
Box Hill) and moved into 7th and 8th, with Bennettswood dropping
to 9th and Ringwood dropping from 7th to 10th. The four is
Bayswater, Blackburn, Templestowe and Doncaster. Side Two had
seven wins for the season and finished 2 shots up on difference.
Side 3, division 6, finished with 14 wins and 240 points,
some 38 points clear of 2nd placed Burwood. In 3rd was Auburn
and 4th was Bennettswood. So it is a home final v Bennettswood
next Saturday. We will all be there to cheer on this great side
as they continue on its winning way. In this section, North
Balwyn and Kingsbury are relegated.
Side 4 had a big win at home v Upwey Tecoma by 72 shots to
55.75. Alas, the 16 points was not enough as 4th placed Mt
Waverley won by 18 points to hold a finals place on the ladder
by just 2 points over Ashburton. It was a good season for Ashy
4 to finish a close 5th, with 10 wins. Ringwood was top,
Healesville 2nd, Chirnside Park 3rd and Mt Waverley 4th.
Mitcham and Mooroolbark are relegated.
Side 5 finished 8th of 9 in their section What this means
in terms of relegation we shall await the winter deliberations
of Bowls Victoria. It was a hard round 18 match v Lilydale with
the Sunday schedule causing havoc to our ability to field full
rinks. Well done to those who fought in the heat under
difficult circumstances. Side 5 finished with four wins for the
season.

The Christmas lunch on Sunday went better than anybody could have expected.
Ken’s Catering was as good as ever but Peter Odgers’ band stole the show this
year as they rocked out memorable songs.
The day started with Liz talking about a fairy with a tree and ended with her
raffling off a chocolate tree.
Greg Hamilton was the MC between the musical numbers and provided many a good
laugh for all attendees, especially previous treasurers.
Liz and the lizzettes performed as brilliantly this year as they did last
year with a new song. Grant Goldsack, son of Dawn and Goldie, was performing
again this year with the same charisma and passion as he put into it last year.
His shirt was only second best to that which the Peter Odgers experiences were
wearing.
The quiet Peter Odgers was the big surprise of the day. Peter was a bit of a
dark horse and brought even bigger meaning to this phrase with his
performance. The trio consisting of Peter Odgers and his two friends blew
everybody away as the mystery band of the day played five songs they learnt from
only four rehearsals. Looks like Peter will now be booked for the opening day
and every Christmas, well I hope they are.
A performance of various members saw them singing an Australian stylised
version of the 12 days of Christmas which but a bit more, unexpected, humour to
the day. As usual the carols saw
The day ended in silence with Liz having everyone’s attention whilst she drew
the raffles. Jack Moffat was the big winner of the day scoring himself the food
hamper, looking at the size two people must have helped him carry it to the car.
Margaret Christie was the winner of the big chocolate tree, much to the
disappointment of everyone else who wanted it, and she was very happy about it.
Ray Odgers won the gift box of wine and lots of people walked home with door
prizes.
All in all, it was an excellent day, a big thank you to the social committee
for their hard work in organizing such a successful day.

The Ashburton greens require mid season maintenance work including top
dressing. This can only occur when the couch grass is in full growth mode, in
peak summer. Before we can again use the greens we need a period of rest,
recovery and growth, ideally stimulated by good weather conditions.
The challenge this year is that the break between pennant games is only 17
days. Bowls Victoria has not been helpful in considering the needs of the 87
couch grass clubs. So we have some more stringent timetables to follow and a
small risk that the greens will not have sufficient time to recover if the
conditions work against us.
The Work Schedule - Top Green First.
Work on the greens will begin on Tuesday 18th Dec. The Top Green
will be scarified and then top dressed with soil on Wednesday 19th
Dec. The Top Green will remain closed until the grass grows through the soil by
about the 12th January, the date that Saturday Pennant resumes.
We have Sides 1, 4 & 5 all playing at home on 12 January. Good weather and
growing conditions will be required for the top green to be restored to a
reasonable condition to allow for play. It will take some weeks for this green
to harden up and provide speeds of 14 plus seconds which we have enjoyed to
date.
Lower Green Work.
The Lower Green will remain open for Pennant on Sat 22nd December,
when Sides 2 & 3 will need to share 8 rinks which will push play very close to
the banks. The Lower Green will be closed that night to allow for scarifying on
Sunday 23rd Dec and Mon 24th Dec.
The fungus that infested this green some weeks ago has proved to be very
difficult to eliminate and will prevent the top dress this summer. But Russell
needs to keep it well watered to prevent the fungus from getting worse. This
green may be available for practice by about Sunday 6th January,
however to allow the grass to recover from the deep scarify and hopefully
overcome the fungus, it will not be cut and rolled until Mon 7th Jan
Without the top dress, the speed of this green will continue to be 14 plus
seconds. However the trade off is that without the new soil, problems may occur
over the winter when moss and algae may be difficult to manage.
It will be reasonable for play for Tuesday Pennant on Tues 8th
January and will remain open, but if you are looking to practice, be aware that
on Wed 9th Jan, Mid Week Bowls is on from 1.00pm until 4.00pm.
Singles Finals
Members are also reminded that the Men’s and Ladies Singles Finals will be
held at 5.00 pm on Sunday 13th Jan followed by a Chicken and
Champagne Dinner. Hopefully the Lower Green will have recovered sufficiently to
allow for good bowling conditions.
Future Work
Russell plans to top dress the Top Green again after the Owen Jones
Tournament on the 6th April mainly to try and repair the long
standing problem with rink 10. If this is successful then the Top Green will be
renovated in April each year and not over Xmas which will allow a green to be
available for play over the Xmas / New Year period in the future, but not this
year.
The Lower Green will remain open for play in 2013 until the Winter sets in
and causes the green to be too damp underfoot. In 2012 this occurred in
mid-June.

Saturday
Pennant mid
season, nine
rounds down,
nine rounds to
go. Ashburton
has had a strong
first half of
the season,
especially the
last few weeks.
We have had more
wins than losses
and a couple of
Sides are well
placed to
contemplate more
games at season
end. Though our
top side will
need to convert
close matches
into wins in the
second half to
avoid moving
into the bottom
two.
Rounds 8 and
9 in particular
have been great
for Ashburton
with Sides 2, 3,
4 and 5 having
two wins each.
If Side 1 can
capture some of
the impetus, the
second half of
the season looks
bright.
For the
Ashburton season
so far,
Side 3
(division 6)
leads the way
with seven wins
and only one
loss. They hold
a remarkable
+124.75 shots
difference.
However, the
season did not
start with
promise. A wash
out in round 1,
a close win by 3
shots at home v
Croydon and a 4
shot loss to
Bennettswood in
round 3 was an
average start -
at this stage
Ashburton 3 had
a 1/1/1 record
and were middle
of the pack.
The real
winning feeling
flowed in round
4 with a 4 rink,
27 shot belting
of North
Balwyn. Then in
round 5, Ashy
just pipped
Doncaster by 1
shot and
Greensborough by
5 shots the next
week. Rounds 7,
8 and 9 saw more
convincing wins
against
Greythorn (23
shots), Burwood
District (14
shots) and
Kingsbury (51.75
shots).
At the season
turn, Ashburton
3 hold the top
of the table
position by 16
points over
Auburn 1. Third
placed Greythorn
2 are 28 points
behind
Ashburton. The
wash out in
round 1 v Auburn
1 denied
Ashburton a
chance to see
how they could
go against this
other strong
performer in
this section.
So it will be a
real next test
this Saturday v
Auburn at home.
Should Ashburton
win, it will be
daylight to
second place.
Ashburton 2
(division 4)
are also well
placed being
third on the
league table, 18
points behind
leader Doncaster
2 and only one
point behind
second placed
Blackburn 3.
The story for
this side has
been good rink
wins and winning
all home games
played. It has
the best ratio
of rink wins per
game of any side
in the section.
The wash out in
round 1 was a
home game, there
were only three
other home
games, all won
by Ashburton.
It won 2 of its
5 away games for
a 5/3/1 record
at the half of
the season.
Ashburton 5
had a poor start
with only one
win in the first
five rounds.
Round six saw a
bye and round 7
was a walk over
given by
Boronia. The
three week break
seemed to
refresh this
Ashburton
division 7 side
who had good
wins in rounds 8
and 9 to
complete the
first half of
the season in
6th place on the
table.
Ashburton 4
really hit its
stride in the
last two rounds
with a big win
v Mooroolbark
by 68 shots and
Upwey Tecoma by
30 shots to
complete the
first half of
the season in
7th place.
Whilst it does
sit 7th, there
is little danger
of falling into
the bottom two
at this point.
Ashburton 4 have
a lead of 10
points on 8th
place, and are
well clear of
the last two
teams by 39 and
40 points. The
win loss record
is a credible
4/4/1.
The top
side, Division 2,
has had three
wins. Of the
five losses, two
have been very
close, 2 and 4
shots only.
Ashburton 1 now
sit in an
uncomfortable
8th place with
68 points just a
couple of points
ahead of 9th
placed
Doncaster. In
the run up to
the holiday
break, they play
4th, 5th and 6th
placed teams and
two are away
games. It maybe
cold turkey at
Christmas unless
we can show our
best over the
next three
Saturdays.
Go
Ashburton.

Ray Namour and rink had
smiles so wide their faces
were in danger of cracking
after Saturday’s round 8
match against Doncaster at
home. Ray, and Peter Arndt,
Graeme Goldsack and Denise
Taylor won 39-9 to take rink
of week honors.
Ray came down from the
firsts the previous week and
had an unhappy day with a
loss, so turning it around
in a big way this week was
worth smiling about. Ray has
been known to crack it on
occasions, and crack the
head with his drives. So
cracking a smile was
supported by all. And in a
follow up to his sparkling
form, on Sunday he won his
singles match against the
formidable Ken Lawrence.
Well done again Ray.

Clarice has been part of the Ashburton Bowling Club since before it even opened in 1956.
In 1954 Clarice, with some other ladies, worked in the shed at the far end of the bowling green providing sandwiches and tea for the men who were digging ditches and leveling the green.
One of these men was Clarice's late husband,Alan, a war veteran. For two years he and others came after work to prepare the ground for the future Bowling Club, Clar:ice left school at the age of 13, putting her age up to 15 to become an apprentice to a seamstress in Elsternwick, earning just six shillings a week. Much later in life she applied her skills on a craft stall at her beloved bowling club. For over 30 years she made thousands of dollars for the club with this stall, and at one stage was Lady President for two years.
Clarice's bowling this season has been curtailed owing to a knee replacement. Even so, she is still actively involved with the indoor bowls group and loves to take part in their card sessions. Her name can be seen on a board at the club, as a mark of recognition "for her many years of outstanding service at the Bowling Club lnc.".
I wonder how many other clubs could boast of a member who has been part of a
club for 58 years? Congratulations, Clarice, for your many achievements at the
Ashburton Bowling Club.
